1 【薦める】 〔推薦する〕 recommend.

●…に薦められて on the recommendation of….

●先生に薦められた本 a book recommended by the teacher.

●あなたのご本をぜひ読むようにと彼女に薦めておきました. I have recommended your book to her.

・彼女が薦める商品は売り上げが伸びるので, 彼女は CM にひっぱりだこだ. She's in great demand for commercials because the products she endorses increase their sales.

2 【勧める】 〔勧告する〕 recommend [advise] 《sb to do》; 〔奨励する〕 encourage; urge; 〔勧誘する〕 advise; counsel; exhort; persuade; prevail upon 《sb to do》; talk 《sb into doing》.

●進学を勧める encourage [advise] sb to go on to university [move on to a higher grade of education]

・加入を勧める recommend [persuade] sb to join [subscribe]

・自首を勧める urge sb to turn himself in (to the police)

・勤勉を勧める exhort sb to diligence [to work hard]

・腰かけるように勧める invite sb to be seated

・…に勧められて at [on] the suggestion [advice] of…

・熱心に勧める urge strongly.

●あの男に水泳を勧めても無駄だ. It is no use trying to persuade him to swim.

・彼女に勧められてこの仕事を引き受けた. It is at her suggestion [instance] that I have undertaken this job.

・医師に勧められて散歩を始めた. I started going for walks on the advice [recommendation] of my doctor.

・成長期の子供の筋肉トレーニングはお勧めできない. Muscle training exercises can't be recommended to growing children.

3 【勧める】 〔利用を促す〕 offer 《sb sth》; present 《sb with sth》; 〔強いる〕 press; force.

●酒を勧める offer sb (a cup of) sake; 〔強いる〕 force [press] sake on sb

・お茶を勧める offer sb a cup of tea

・いすを勧める offer sb a chair [seat].

●いやがるのを無理に勧めても仕方がない. It would be no use [There would be no point in] forcing it on him.

・お勧めいただいたからには一口いただきましょう. Since you're offering, I don't mind having just a drop.

・勧められなくても勝手に(酒を)やりますからお気遣いなく. Don't worry. I'll help myself to a drink without waiting for it to be offered.

・勧めるのがうまいねえ. You make it hard to say no.
